English colonists from Salem were the first settlers in Lynn.
American colonists continued to use British monetary units, namely the pound, shilling and pence for which £1 (orli) equalled 20s and 1s equalled 12d. In 1792 the dollar was established as the basic unit of currency.

Robert Ingalls, son of Edmund Ingalls was born in Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, England about 1621, and came to New England with his parents. he was a farmer at Lynn and inherited his father's farm. He was admitted a freeman in 1691. On January 1, 1685/6 he deeded most of his estate to his sons Robert, Nathaniel, and Samuel, they to support the widow and pay the other heirs. He was buried January 3, 1698.
He married Sarah, daughter of William Harker. She died April 8, 1696.

Any man entering a colony or becoming a a member the church, was not free. He was not forced to work, but his movements were carefully observed to see if they followed the Puritanical ideal. After this probationary period, he became a "freeman." Men then took the Oath of a Freeman where they vowed to defend the Commonwealth and not to overthrow the government.
In 1688, during the Glorious Revolution, the Protestant king and queen,William and Mary, took the English throne from Catholic King James II. The bloodless revolution profoundly impacted the American colonies.
